Playing the game

Tennis Australia has forced people attending the Australian Open to remove “Free Peng Shuai” t-shirts on the grounds that they contain a political statement, contrary to the terms and conditions of ticket sales.

Tennis Australia has made the event political by accepting sponsorship from a totalitarian regime which has now prevented one of the world’s top players from competing for political reasons.

The founding principals of sport are supposed to be “fair play” and “let the best man or woman win”. TA seems to have forgotten this. The protestors are right to remind them.

It would serve TA right if the winner of the Women’s Final refused to accept the trophy on the grounds that they couldn’t be sure that they had won it fairly and squarely.
