My first day of fieldwork as a Special Enumerator. An absolutely amazing day.
(I would love to share more of this with my reader, but the Census, quite rightly, forbids me from doing so for at least a hundred years and quite possibly forever).
I made a slight error of judgement when dressing for work this morning. As a matter of habit, I dressed “for the office” i.e. for an environment where the air conditioning has a mind of its own (I once got earache in the middle of July). Except, of course, I wasn’t going to spend the day at a an office desk; I was going to spend the day walking round Oxford under a blue sky in the warm spring sunshine.
By the end of the day I was hot, tired and there wasn’t a square inch of my body that wasn’t in pain, but I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
