Tree in winterOn Boxing Day I went out to the Cotswold village of Swinbrook with friends. The leafless trees sillhouetted like black lace against the winter sky were breathtaking.

Swinbrook itself is an old village with an “Old Post Office”, “Old Forge” etc. These days it functions as an upmarket housing estate  – all Farrow & Ball and barn conversions, but at this time of year it’s easy to imagine how hard life must have been when it was a working village of farms, dirt, poverty and stifling social hierarchies.
