Old Traditions, New Visions, is a bit of a departure from the exquisitely detailed prints that usually grace the Oriental Art gallery at The Ashmolean. These are full sized paintings and drawings which are not obviously oriental.
Usually, an artist’s date of birth and death is something that you glance at in passing, but in the case of Old Traditions, New Visions they are critical to understanding the works. What these particular artists have in common is that they were born and grew up in British India, but did much of their work as citizens of the newly created republics of India and Pakistan – most of the works in this exhibition date from the 1950s and 60s. I popped into the Ashmolean today, partly following your review of this exhibition, and loved it. Not every image was to my taste but it was, nevertheless, a rich collection despite its small size and introduced me to a group of artists I hadn’t previously known about.
I might revisit this with a sketchbook to capture some impressions. Thanks for noting it on your blog.
