There are some subjects that it’s impossible to take a bad picture of – Venice, peacocks, pigs. The challenge is to take one that stands out from the crowd, which is why I was quite pleased with this photo taken at Harcourt Arboretum last Wednesday. It’s partly luck, of course; the bird happened to be looking straight at the lens at that precise moement. It’s partly technical – using the right lens – in this case a telephoto lens which allows for the close up and the limited depth of field. But what really sets it off is the limited blue and green palette which helps to give it a painterly quality.
