Red kite attacks gull in South Park, OxfordThe bonfire was over , the fair was packing up and the seagulls were systematically working their way through cold chips and other detritus from last night’s firework display in South Park when drama struck.

The seagulls started to take off. At first, they simply regrouped on another area of grass and carried on scoffing dead chips. Then they took to the skies in alarm as a red kite hovered and swooped – kites, it would appear, prefer their food fresh and locally sourced.

Anyway, it all made for a terrific photo opportunity as well as another reminder that this superficially domesticated space still has a wild, untamed edge to it.
