Whilst searching for lunch (more difficult than it sounds), I popped in to the newly refurbished St Ebbe’s.
Although there’s been a church on this site since Saxon times, the present building is 19th century creation. During January 2016’s tour of Oxford building sites, Julian-the-retired-architect and I popped our heads through the door to see the beginnings of a major internal reordering project. The aim of the project was to create more capacity to accommodate the growing congregation and to make the premises more flexible for weekday use.
The result is pretty impressive. Galleries have increased the seating capacity and the feel is more of a non-conformist chapel than an Anglican church – perhaps not entirely inappropriate for a parish which saw the birth of Methodism.
I quite like it – it’s light, simple and practical, although it’s a shame that you no longer get a clear view of the windows.

After Work 
There’s a sound post-reformation tradition in adding balconies to Anglican churches, and indeed building new churches with them. Not sure what Pevsner would have thought of this, and personally I think the chairs are awful and contribute nothing to an otherwise rather stark & minimalist interior. I prefer the under stated polished wood & stainless steel chairs one sees in some cathedrals.
